First Literature contest winners

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 26, 2014, 4:23 PM
I decided to host a literature contest, to encourage writer-visual artist collaboration. The goal was to write something short, or a poem under 200-300 words inspired by this painting. I'm really happy with the entries I got, I'd like to say thanks to those who participated! I hope you all had fun, and enjoyed creating your stories.

Drummer by KarinaMacGill

Here are the three contest entries:

The Académie had declared the anarchy would not be allowed to persist, battle lines indelibly drawn, paint WOULD be spilled. Contestants summoned, champions of the old guard instructed solemnly that Courbet’s honor was precariously placed in their pigment covered hands. The opposing creative force drawn up in a combative legion upon the field. The diminutive drummer was given the official nod; and completely perplexed — began to play “Le Boudin” with perfectly detached proficiency as paint began flying. Looking on in a dutiful state of entrancement, the drummer was unaware of having been stationed far too close to the epicenter of battle — incautiously close to the maelstrom of palette and canvas; true, no camel hair brush with death to be sure, though far too intimate with the artistic trenches. In time, the spellbound spectator might come to discover all was very real, maybe it would merely be a strangely lingering impression. Yes, there would be a vague memory of the day when a drummer was summoned in the trial of Cézanne in mortal combat with Millet, a recollection of a tune so militarily tapped as impeccably appropriate … for watching that art made was as unnerving as observing the making of sausage.

Rain colors       I crush the clumps of pigment between my fingers. They crumble at my touch like so much sand, but I know their magic. Even dry they smell of rain and damp earth.
I know we need rain, even though my uncles won’t say so in front of me. The grass is as brittle as straw. Where the pond should be, there is only a dry dip in the ground, crisscrossed with a spiderweb of cracks. The blades on the cornstalks curl into stiff dusty spikes, and I know, though no one tells me, that corn will not be good this year, and my daddy is worried. But most of all I see that drought has stolen the color from my world. Everything: people, fields, animals, and houses, all becomes the same cinnamon color of dry dust.
I know this well, yet I do something wasteful. Guiltily, I pour a trickle of water into the hollow of my hand to mix my paints. The colors are bright and fresh as if well watered. Of all the paints, I like blue bes
Contest Entry - The RitualSounds of the drums in the air.
Slowly moving forward.
Quiet footsteps on the dry ground.
Ready to start running.
The ritual starts.
Footsteps getting faster and faster.
No time to stop.
First one to finish.
Survived this time.
Heart still racing.
The sounds of the drums fading away.
Vision becomes blurry.
Legs getting weaker.
Falling to the ground.

Artist | Professional | Traditional art
I'm a very impulsive, constantly day dreaming artist. I love fantasy, science fiction, and touching true stories. I mostly draw rpg characters and scenes. I study 2D animation and love animated movies.
What is my passion? I have true deep love for comics, graphic novels, and cartoons to. :D
I use traditional media whenever possible. I'm still struggling with the thought of painting digitally, but I might get tempted.
Also, I make polymer clay dolls, and love to do crafty stuff!
